White Earth Legal Services

Free or low-cost legal services help people who cannot afford a lawyer access the court system. Family Law Matters: We represent victims of crime or domestic violence in civil law matters. This includes family law issues such as custody and access, protection orders, child support, and dissolution of marriage. Tribal Wellness Court: ALC provides services to eligible individuals who participate in the Leech Lake and White Earth Tribal Welfare Courts. To be eligible for services, clients must ask the court to hire a lawyer to represent them. Please see the links below to find out which court form you would like to work with. Programs that provide legal advice and/or representation to low-income individuals who need assistance in day-to-day legal matters, usually in the areas of bankruptcy, housing, public benefits, family law, elder law, or immigration or naturalization. Provides free legal advice to low-income individuals living on or near the Leech Lake, Red Lake and White Earth reservations in northwestern Minnesota. They represent their clients in tribal courts, state courts, and authorities to help them protect their rights.

Programs that provide assistance to Native Americans who require legal advice or representation regarding federal recognition, treaty rights, fishing and hunting rights, environmental protection, reserve boundaries, land acquisition, land and water rights, Native American games, housing, health, taxes, or jurisdictional matters.

Lawyers working in this area deal with treaties, statutes, executive orders, court decisions, and administrative measures that define the relationship between the United States, Native American tribes and individuals, and states. Defenders of Native American laws can be found in federal agencies such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Indian Claims Commission, which hears and adjudicates claims against the United States on behalf of a Native American tribe. Private law firms also have lawyers who specialize in issues related to Native American lands and reservations, tribal rights, and other legal issues affecting Native Americans. Some Native American tribes recognized as sovereign entities with the power to regulate their internal and social organization have lawyers who may themselves be members of the tribe and/or lawyers who are hired as “attorney general” to manage their tribe`s legal affairs. Public services also serve the Native American community with lawyers who specialize in the Indian Child Protection Act and others who serve children, the elderly, or impoverished members of the Native American community. ALS provides legal assistance to eligible clients in tribal, state, and agency courts to help them protect their rights. Anishinabe Legal Services has offices in Leech Lake, Red Lake and White Earth. Anishinabe Legal Services is a grant recipient from the Legal Services Corporation (LSC) and an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides free legal assistance to low-income individuals living on or near the Leech Lake, Red Lake, and White Earth reservations in northwest Minnesota. A legal aid program that provides legal advice and/or representation to low-income individuals, typically in the areas of disability rights, seniors` rights, and family law programs that assist people wrongly or for some reason evicted from their homes or other rental properties. Also included are programs that attempt to prevent eviction and possible homelessness by providing mediation services to negotiate a compromise between an individual and the landlord. We provide assistance to those who comply with our financial policies in areas such as child protection, family law, evictions, seizures, wills, social security, civil forfeiture, Indian law and custody/visitation. Programs that provide information, advice and/or representation in court proceedings to individuals who have been victims of intimate partner violence and/or to individuals subject to summary convictions or criminal complaints of abuse. These include domestic violence legal clinics and other legal aid programs that represent victims of domestic violence in injunction hearings or other civil or criminal remedies against an offender. Most also represent the interests of the person in complexities that arise as part of the court process, such as restitution, payment of debt or child support, custody and access, and control of property. Some programs may also represent victims of family violence who have been charged with a crime and/or deal with cases involving allegations of child abuse by one parent against the other, elder abuse by an adult child, or abuse of an adult child by one parent. People who are generally between 18 and 25 years old, depending on the age that some programs use for the qualification.
